Choosing a Futon Mattress for Your Dorm Room

May 9, 2012.

It’s quite challenging to pick out furniture items for a college dorm. Given the restricted space that you have to work with, you have to think of creative and practical ways to buy yourself more space for other items or for activities.

Most university students know the many benefits of getting a futon mattress for cramped dorms as this is a multi-functional furniture piece that can be used as a bed or couch.

The kinds of futons we see today are the ones that usually come in reconfigurable frames. These frames can be folded two or three times, depending on how many sections a futon sofa bed has. A number of people like the bi-fold types as these are easier to fold. For a college dorm, bi-folds will be better options because these take up less space than tri-folds. The bi-fold can be snugly set against a wall, and with a few small adjustments, you can make it into a sofa or bed. Mattresses are also found in various forms. There are mattresses made of natural or synthetic materials, or a combination of both. The thing about mattresses is that those with synthetic layers generally last a lot longer than those made of 100% natural substances, like cotton or wool. Like frames, mattresses and covers also come in standard sizes. So, you can choose one that will fit well with your small room. Just take the time to take room measurements first before purchasing a futon. Also, college students will definitely be able to express themselves with futon covers as these exist in a multitude of colors, prints, themes and fabrics. Hence, whether you are traditional, modern, or one who loves tropical themes, you’ll surely find a cover that will appeal to you. Moreover, futon slipcovers are so easy to clean. These can simply be removed and washed, making it rather effortless to keep.

Cramped college dorms can look adorable with an appropriate futon mattress. Although rooms are usually cramped, the right futon design can add life and pizzaz to your dorm room, and you don’t have to shell out much for it.
