Different Types of Dog Collar – Which One to Choose

Collars are made from different materials. The most common are leather, nylon, fabric and metal.

Depending on the intended purpose, you can choose one from any of these materials. If your intention of buying a collar is for it to be used for training purposes, those that are made from leather and metal are your choices. However, between the two, leather material is mostly favored. A collar made from metal like those that are seen in choke chains, might cause injury to your dog’s neck and strangulation may happen ,if not use properly.

A dog collar comes in different sizes and types. The one you ought to choose should not only be based on aesthetics alone. Most importantly, you have to know first its intended use before making a selection. Determine whether you want it for everyday use, fashion, training or protection.

Dog Collar Types
▪ Everyday collars – are available in different materials. However, this one needs to be comfortable since your dog would be wearing this the whole day. It should be comfortable but strong enough to withstand daily use. You can express your dog’s unique personality with these collars by choosing unusual and fun designs and patterns.

▪ Chain slip collars – are for training purposes only. Choke chains as called by other people, but it is not highly recommended because it may result to injury of the neck if not use correctly.

▪ Breakaway collars – are great to use because it comes with a special safety feature that prevents choking. This is also suitable for everyday use since your dog is safe and comfortable with it. Just make sure that it comes with a tag, bearing your name, address and contact information in case your dog may be lost.

▪ Pinch collars – are also known as metal prong and are similar to chain slip collars. These collars are effective to use for strong and stubborn dogs that tend to pull the leash during training.

▪ Head collars – are intended to help train the dog in walking on a leash. Also known as halter, it allows gentle control of the head since the collar fits snugly around your dog’s neck.

As a pet owner, you just want to provide your dog nothing but the best.
